Indian government to take measures to expand silk production

India is the second largest silk producer in the world and the silk industry is one of the main pillars of India's national economy. Recognizing the importance of the silk industry, the Indian government decided to develop the production of four silk products through special arrangements during the 14th planning period (end 2012). It has been reported that the government has earmarked 14.76 billion rupees for this purpose. At present, the annual demand of Indian silk industry is about 26,000 tons, meanwhile, about 5,500 tons are imported from China to meet the supply and demand gap. Officials at the Central Silk Commission (CSB), the highest-profile silk industry in India, said the government plans to raise silk production from the current 18,475 tons to 26,000 tons by 2012. Four varieties concentrated in silk, tussah silk, castor silk and amber silk. CSB is currently implementing the "Contact Response Development Program (CDP)" and a number of focused programs have been used to develop sericulture, including the development of mulberry industry in both traditional and non-traditional areas. According to the CDP plan, various state governments have earmarked a special fund of 307.6 million rupees. The CSB also suggests building 40 sericulture and silk clusters in different regions, including mulberry and wild silk, in 2008-09. The committee believes that cluster sericulture will help increase yields and reduce production costs, and the government will make it easier for serfs to provide Necessary facilities. CSB is also committed to promoting biochemical silk production, boosting the production of biochemical silk from 1,200 to 5,000 tons in the 14th planned 2007-08 period.
